Marcia's Birthday Minion Cake

My good friend Marcia was turning 22 and she has a strange obsession with the minions from the Despicable Me films so of course it had to be a minion cake. She's been a very good friend since I moved back to North Wales even though we haven't known each other long so I put a lot of effort into getting this right. I started with stacking some round madeira cakes. I also baked one madeira cake in a bowl to make a curved a top, I put this on top of the stacked round cakes to make a find of half pill top shape. I put butter cream and jam in between all the layers. I then covered the whole thing in butter cream and then coated it in a layer of marzipan. I took some yellow fondant and coated the whole cake in a layer of if. I planned out my minion using a sharp tool and made marks for where the eye should be and the trousers and so on, using an image of the minion to help me. I made some denim look fondant be taking some dark blue fondant and some light blue fondant and kneading them together leaving them streaky. I then rolled it out and cut the shape of the dungarees using a pizza cutter. I made a front and a back, then two strips to make the shoulder straps and placed them over the top. I stuck everything in place using edible glue. I took a pointed and added the stitch detail along all the edges.
I started the eye buy rolling out a thin layer of white fondant and cutting out a circle and sticking it in place. I did the same with some brown fondant only cutting a much smaller hole and with some black fondant cutting an even smaller hole. I then made a reflection in the eye by rolling a small ball of white fondant and flattening it to make a small disk.
For the goggle I used a panel smoother to roll out a piece of grey fondant into a long tube. The panel smoother makes rolling up sausage shapes a lot easier and they are instantly smooth. I then wrapped this tube around the eye and cut where the tube met and stuck it in place smoothing over where needed.
The head strap was made using black fondant rolled out in a long length then cut using a pizza cutter and a long ruler there is a specific tool available for this I just don't have it! I stuck it in place cutting the strap where it met the goggle.
The mouth was more difficult as it was a specific shape I couldn't use cutters for so again I studied the image of the minion and using a pizza cutter I cut out the mouth in black and the tongue in red and then used a knife to cut the buck teeth and stuck everything in place.
I used black fondant to mold a hand, I knew I wanted mine to and the same yellow fondant as I used before to roll out two little sausages for arms. I also rolled out a long thin tube of black fondant and made some hair. I finished off the minion with Marcia's name and the 22 on his front. I also added a couple of little sugar jasmine for extra showy-offyness!
Oh and I also dusted the goggle with some metalic silver dust so give it that tin effect.
I was really please with this cake and I know Marcia loved it, she even stopped everyone from eating the front so that she could keep looking at it for longer and that made me happy. It tasted good too!

Here's Marcia and our friend Tomas out for her birthday. Not long after her birthday she flew off to Mexico to work at a reservation for sea turtles. Alright for some!
